Emily’s Angels race for cancer

The Seel & Co ladies are standing up to cancer after our colleague Emily was diagnosed with the disease.

Emily Murphy, age 28, who works for Seel & Co in Canton, found out in February that she has breast cancer – so co-workers and friends decided they were going to face the disease head on and take part in the 5k Cardiff Race for Life on July 17.

Emily’s colleague Kathryn Provis explained why they are doing what they can to support Cancer Research in its effort to find a cure to the disease.

When we got the news it hit all of us like a ton of bricks,” she said.

To say we all had a bad day at this office was an understatement, but immediately we were thinking what we can do for her.

In an effort to raise as much money as they can for Cancer Research UK, Seel & Co’s female staff and their friends have come together as Emily’s Angels, and are preparing for the run, while also ensuring that they are sharing as much information about cancer as possible.

Emily’s Angels have been encouraged by the CRUK Wales representative and are taking the stage on the race day to carry out the countdown and take part in the morning’s events.

Emily herself has also been helping where she can. Just before surgery and chemotherapy, she cut her long hair and donated the locks to The Little Princess Trust, who make wigs for young cancer patients who lose their hair during treatment.

We are running on Emily’s behalf and to raise awareness that this disease can affect people of any age,” Kathryn added.

Anyone finding a lump or mass should not accept it being dismissed as fatty tissue. You must push for answers, especially if you are young and don’t fall into the normal age range. Emily’s experience it proof that breast cancer can strike at any age.

We all know this disease is out there but most don’t address it until someone they know is affected. We want to show our support for Emily in these months ahead, especially as she faces surgery and then six months of chemo and radio therapy.

We want her to know we love her and are prepared to support her in any way we can.

The team running the Race for Life are Kathryn Provis, Lynne Jones, Carla Morris, Kimberley Holbourn, Georgia Provis, Kath Jones, Jo White, Fiona Braine, Olivia Provis-Lewis, Claire Provis-Lewis, Eleanor Byrne, Teresa Burgess, Sharon Bennett and Natasha Fairweather
